Coaching

Playful waves in the pacific ocean

There’s only very few places like Punta Luna that we’re privileged to just share the waves amongst ourselves. It’s the ideal way of applying the theoretical know-how you got taught in the morning. There’s no shortage of waves to improve your level on and to enjoy long, glassy, perfectly peeling lefthanders. Marc has been running wave clinics for more than a decade and has been on the forefront of implementing video review tools into the kitesurf wave coaching.

Is this for me?

Trip of a lifetime

This is some of the best wavekiting conditions that you can experience. The water is not in tropical colours nor its temperature, but the combination of fairly long, perfectly peeling and glassy waves make it a kitesurfing experience you won’t forget.

It’s necessary to have a good level of being an advanced to expert rider mainly because of the side-offshore winds that prevail and for having to cross waves getting off the beach. So we need you to be a safe and confident kiter with some experience in the waves as we are in a pretty remote area and want to focus on your waveriding rather than doing rescues. There is however safety infrastructure, so it’s never going to be too sketchy of course.

Besides all that Peru is a great and safe place to explore, the time in the Natural Reserve kiting waves on our own in such a great and raw surrounding is something truly special that you’ll keep within for the rest of your life.

Wave kiting at its finest

Peru is well known in the surfing world for providing some of the longest lefts for surfing. There’s also some jewels for kiting since there are fairly consistent thermal winds blessing the coastline from April to November with side-offshore winds working well together with its lefthander waves that are mainly picking up southerly swells at that time of the year.

Transportation: How do I get here?

Main arrival airport in Peru is Lima. From there you can travel north either by bus (the cheap, more backpacker style way – or you fly to either Trujillo, Chiclayo or Piura. For accessing the Lodge inside the Illescas Natural Reserve Piura is closest. If you combine Punta Luna with Pacasmayo, then Chiclayo is ideal as it lies roughly in between. Trujillo lies south of Pacasmayo but is a great entry point if you combine it with Chicama which lies even further south.

Delicious local food: What and where to eat in Punta Luna?

There is nowhere elso to go eat in Punta Luna than the Maria’s kitchen right in the Lodge. She cooks very tasty and yummy food – it’s actually almost not possible to kite enough to keep the food intake at level with the energy spent at sea.

The history of Punta Luna

It was legendary Peruvian surfer Fernando “Wawa” Paraud who was also a kitesurf pioneer, known for his charm, good vibe and charger spirit, that discovered the spot and named it Punta Luna. It was a hidden game, which he only shared with his closest friends, one of which was Martin Vari, a Cabrinha team mate of Marc in the early kiting years. Wawa and his friends kept it quiet for 15 years, surfing perfect waves with no one else around. After Wawa’s passing, it took some time utnil Martin and his wife Ana took over the management of the lodge to keep it well maintained and to keep Wawa’s spirit going.

Kitesurfing in Peru

Punta Luna lies on one of the most western points of South America and is actually blessed with most wind of all the known spots. With small and medium sized waves it’s a pretty easy spot, the waves have a bit more punch to it than for example Pacasmayo, which is nice especially when its smaller. On the very big days the wave tends to be fairly quick making it a challenge to really keep up, but since the waves are so glassy it makes it easier to stay in control an get out in time.

Weather and seasons: When is the best time to kitesurf in and around Punta Luna?

The wind season in Northern Peru is from April to November. It’s blowing through all the southern hemisphere winter. Mai/June is the nicest as there’s still a bid of summer warmth around, the fog hasn’t moved in all that much towards the coastline, and there’s a good chance of getting some prime swell activity from the southern ocean.
DJI_0076

Around the area: What else is to explore in Punta Luna?

The Surf Lodge is the only establishment inside the Illescas Natural Reserve which consists of thirty eight thousand hectares. There is raw nature around you with heaps of wildlife, including the Andean Condors, Bluefooted Boobies, Penguins, Pelicans, Sealions, Foxes and more. There’s strolls up and down the coastline, around the dunes, up onto the mountains etcetc.
